Photos of African Birds by Yvonne van der MeyAgain, like with everything else, the diversity of birds in South Africa, and the Kruger Park especially, is immense. They come in all colours, shapes and sizes. My real love for birds began in Kruger. Sure, before that I saw them and I did appreciate them. But after some time I really started enjoying watching them, identifying them (eventhough it's sometimes very difficult) and trying to capture them on a photograph. Of course it helped a lot that I got the right camera equipment at that time, a huge telelens, which made it a lot easier to "catch" them. With more than 400 different species in Kruger, it is hard to know them all, so each time I stay there, I learn about a few new ones. It is hard to choose a favourite. A Lilac-brested Roller is almost too beautiful, and a Burchell's Coucal has a huge appeal to me. An African Fisheagle is so impressive, and some are almost too difficult to catch, like the Brown Hooded Parrot. But I think if I should have to make a choice, the Kingfisher family has got it all. Getting close to one of them gives me almost the same thrill as being close to one of the big cats. And especially the Woodland Kingfisher, when I hear it's cry, I feel at home immediately. I hope you enjoy these photographs as much as I do. © Please respect the copyright protection on my work and contact me if you are interested in possible reprint permisions.
