Mongoose photographs by Yvonne van der MeyEven though they are small, mongooses are a true member of the predator family. Most of the species feed on insects and beetles, but will also eat lizards, snakes, eggs and berries. They are diurnal, and the best chance to see them is in the early morning and late afternoon. There is little chance of seeing them when it is cold, overcast or raining. The Dwarf Mongoose, smallest species, is the easiest to find and also
the nicest to observe. It can take a lot of patience when approaching
them to take photographs, because each movement or sound sends them scuttling
underground, and they'll only return when it's safe. Their worst enemies
are raptors, except for the Dwarf Mongoose who has a lot more enemies,
such as jackals, snakes and other Mongoose species. Mongooses are not
dependent on water because their food contains enough moisture, but when
it is available, they will drink from time to time. Some of the species
are solitary and some of them live in large groups.
