Photos of Warthog by Yvonne van der Mey

Undoubtly one of the funniest animals in Africa. Honestly, they are soooo ugly, with those big warts on their faces. Males have two sets of warts that are bigger than the warts on the females, who have just one smaller set next to their eyes. They have little hair, except for the bristly mane. Like an antennae, they hold their tales straight up when running away. They can grow very large tusks, especially the boars. The upper tusks can get as long as 60 cm.

They are the favourite food of leopards, but all the main predators are fond of them. They are not dependent on water, but drink when water is available. They shelter mainly in abandoned Aardvark burrows. They eat grasses and fruits, but also reptiles and birds. Females form nursery groups when the piglets are born. Usually two sows take care of all the babies and leave with them, while the rest of the family tries to attract the attention of their enemies.
