Photos of other Dutch mammals by Yvonne van der MeyThe Netherlands has got a variety of other, and mostly, smaller mammals. Apart from the Roe and Red Deer, one can also find Fallow Deer in a few places (they are the ones mostly held in captivity) with their odd, hand-shaped antlers. Another wild animal that can only be found in a few areas, is the Moufflon (or Wild Sheep). They are magnificent animals, especially the mature males with their large, curved horns. Moufflons are a great help in keeping the grass off the moors. We also have predators, the biggest are the Badger and Red Fox, both
very shy and hard to see, except in some places, where foxes use people's
garbage as an easy take-away. Hare can be seen mostly in the farmlands,
eventhough you can sometimes find them in the woods. Smaller predators
like weasels and different species of marters can be (scarcely) found
here as well. And last but not least, the populair squirrel can be found
everywhere in the Netherlands, and seem to prefer living close to people.
