Photos of Roe Deer by Yvonne van der Mey

Roe deer are very succesful in the Netherlands. It's the only member of "big" wildlife that can be found anywhere in the Netherlands, from dunes close to the sea, to forests and they can also be found on farmlands. Unlike Red Deer and Wild Pilgs, which can only be found in wildlife areas. Roe Deer don't damage their environment, because they just eat a bit of this and that while wondering through their environment. They don't graze for very long at one spot.

Roe Deer are relatively small (between 15 & 35 kg) with reddish brown bodies in Summer and a thick grey coatin Winter. The males have erect antlers, which fall off every year (as can be seen below). When alarmed, Roe Deer may 'bark' (a similar sound to a dog's bark) and flash out their white rump patches.
