White Rhino photos by Yvonne van der MeyHere you'll find some of the pictures I've taken of White Rhino, most
of the pictures are taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The name "White" has nothing to do with the colour of the rhino.
Another name for them in Afrikaans is "wijde lip" (wide lip),
because of its square lips. At some point in history, this was translated
into English as "white" rhino. As there was another breed of
rhino as well, they called them the "Black" rhino (puntlip or
hooked lip), which also has nothing to do with their color. The White
Rhino is the larger of the two species and the least aggressive. They
are however still very dangerous. The main reason for this, is that they
have very poor eye sight, and if they hear something they will come closer
to investigate. If they are not sure of the situation, they could even
attack an intruder. During the last century, the White Rhino almost became
extinct because of hunting and poaching. Breeding projects and strong
anti-poaching measures have saved them, but even today a lot of them fall
victim to poaching. Please click on a thumbnail picture below to see a larger version of the photo (please note that your Internet browser must allow pop-up pages and javascript).
